Things to Do in Ella
Sri Lanka's favorite hill town: free hikes, tea-country views, the Nine Arches Bridge, and the waterfalls of Badulla district.
Ella is the town where Sri Lanka itineraries slow down on purpose. Cool air at 20-24°C, green valley views in every direction, and a single walkable main street of cafes make it the natural exhale after the travel days that get you here. Best of all, its headline experiences are free: the Nine Arches Bridge, Little Adam's Peak, and the Ella Rock trail cost nothing but early starts.
Timing is everything in Ella. The bridge is at its best between 6:30 and 9:30am when a train rumbles across and the tour groups have not arrived, and Little Adam's Peak rewards a sunrise walk before the heat. The wider Badulla district adds waterfalls like Ravana and Dunhinda for the days you want a short trip out of town.
Places worth your time in Ella

- Demodara Nine Spiral Loop — A remarkable spiral railway where the line loops over itself and the train emerges from a tunnel directly beneath Demodara station, an old engineering fix for the steep mountain gradient.
- Diyaluma Falls — Sri Lanka's second-highest waterfall at 220 metres, crowned by a chain of natural infinity pools that look out over the Koslanda valley.
- Dowa Ancient Rock Temple — An ancient cave temple between Bandarawela and Badulla, believed to date to the first century BC under King Walagamba, with an unfinished standing Buddha carved straight into the rock face.
- Dunhinda Falls — A powerful 64 metre waterfall known as the Bridal Falls for its constant misty spray, set in forest just outside Badulla town.
- Ella Rock — A tougher half-day hike to a 1,041 metre clifftop with a panorama across the Ella Gap. The trail follows the railway line before climbing through forest and tea estates.
- Halpewatte Tea Factory — A working hillside tea factory above Ella where a guided tour walks you through plucking, rolling, drying and grading, ending with a tasting and wide valley views.
- Idalgashinna — A tiny hill-country railway station perched on a narrow ridge, where the land falls away on both sides and mist drifts through the tea. A quiet, scenic stop between Haputale and Ohiya.
- Lipton's Seat — The viewpoint where tea baron Sir Thomas Lipton once surveyed his estates, offering a 360 degree panorama over the Dambatenne tea country from 1,970 metres.
- Little Adam's Peak — A short, rewarding climb to a 1,141 metre peak with sweeping views over the Ella Gap and the surrounding tea country. It is the easiest big view in Ella, doable before breakfast.
- Mahiyangana Raja Maha Vihara — One of Sri Lanka's most sacred temples, believed to mark the site of the Buddha's first visit to the island over 2,500 years ago. Its great white stupa is said to enshrine a lock of the Buddha's hair.
- Muthiyangana Raja Maha Vihara — An ancient Buddhist temple in the heart of Badulla town, one of the sixteen sacred places (Solosmasthana) said to have been hallowed by the Buddha, with a white stupa and old shrine rooms.
- Namunukula Peak — The highest peak in the Uva highlands at 2,036 metres, a ridge whose name means nine peaks, with huge views over Badulla, Ella and, on clear days, the east coast.
- Newburgh Green Tea Factory — One of the few green tea factories in the hills near Ella, where a guided tour follows the leaf from steaming to rolling and drying, with tastings of the lighter local brew.
- Nildiya Pokuna — An adventurous half-day trek to a hidden cave with an underground freshwater pool, deep in the hills beyond Ella. One of the area's more off-the-beaten-track outings.
- Nine Arches Bridge — A 91 metre stone-and-brick railway viaduct arching over the jungle on the Demodara loop, built in the colonial era without a single steel beam. It is Ella's most photographed spot, best of all when a train rumbles across.
- Pilkington Point — A quiet clifftop viewpoint just outside Ella looking across the Ella Gap and the surrounding tea slopes, a calmer alternative to the busier peaks.
- Ravana's Cave — A cave set high in the rock above Ravana Falls, tied to the Ramayana legend that King Ravana hid Princess Sita here. A steep stairway leads up to the mouth and valley views.
- Ravana Falls — One of Sri Lanka's widest waterfalls, tumbling around 25 metres right beside the Ella to Wellawaya road. Named after the legend of King Ravana, it makes an easy roadside stop.
- Sera Ella Falls — A scenic waterfall tucked into forest near Meegahakiwula in the Badulla hills, quieter than the roadside falls and surrounded by good short walks.
- Sorabora Wewa — An ancient reservoir near Mahiyangana known as the sea of Mahiyangana, its stone sluice cut straight through solid rock more than 2,000 years ago, ringed by hills and birdlife.
- St. Mark's Church, Badulla — A handsome colonial-era Anglican church in Badulla town, built by the British in the 19th century, known for its stone architecture and old memorial plaques.
- Upper Diyaluma Waterfall — Above the main 220 meter drop of Diyaluma Falls, a separate tier of cascades and pools sits at the very top of the cliff, a spot travelers have increasingly come to treat as its own distinct destination rather than simply the source of the more famous plunge below.
